Case 04Shadow of the Colossus Cover Art

Independent fan-art concept · Graphic design and illustration · 2022

Monumental cover art built around scale, silhouette, and atmosphere.

I reimagined the visual identity of Shadow of the Colossus as an independent cover-art exercise, developing one illustrated key-art system and adapting it across game packaging, poster, device, and storefront presentations.

Challenge

Make the character feel small without losing the character.

The composition needed to communicate the game's monumental scale while preserving a readable protagonist, a clear focal path, and enough graphic structure to function as a cover.

Design response

Use silhouette, light, and distance as the hierarchy.

I staged the protagonist against an armored colossus, using atmospheric depth, a warm horizon, and concentrated contrast to lead the eye through the landscape.

Result

One key-art system across physical and digital contexts.

The final illustration holds together across platform cases, a framed poster, a console interface, and a digital storefront without cropping or redrawing the core scene.

My role: Independent concept, illustration, composition, typography, packaging adaptation, and presentation mockups. This is an unofficial, noncommercial fan-art project; Shadow of the Colossus and its intellectual property belong to their respective rights holders.

Art direction

A familiar world, pushed into a new narrative.

The concept nods to the restraint of the original cover while introducing speculative visual cues: colossus-like armor suggests crafting, and an encounter in an open field suggests a more expansive world.

Concept rationaleKey art and narrative cues developed as one composition.

Process

From line study to atmospheric finish.

The drawing establishes scale and silhouette first. Color, haze, and directional light then separate the figures and build the sense of distance without weakening the focal point.

Development studyLine, value, color, and atmosphere.

Application

Designed to hold its presence beyond the cover.

The same key art remains legible as a large-format poster, a console tile, and a storefront hero, proving that the composition can move between physical and digital contexts.
